Nurturing Your Mental Health: Practical Tips for Well-Being

When talking about mental health most people believe it refers to solely the health of the mind, and while that is true, it is not true in its entirety. According to The World Health Organization, “Mental health is a state of well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of everyday life…” It is a combination of looking after your mind, body and soul, and allowing for a more productive and happy person all around. That means mental health encompasses the physical, emotional,  social, and cognitive.  It's no secret that when your mental health suffers even the simplest of tasks can make you feel overwhelmed and stressed. There are, however, simple everyday things you can find to help ease stress and help strengthen your mental fortitude. Everyone has a different approach to meeting their needs, but the important thing is you find what works for you and for you practice them on a REGULAR basis. Here are some simple everyday things you can start doing now to help improve your mental health.

Clearing Clutter/ Cleaning Up: For some people having a clean space allows for a clearer way of thinking. When someone’s space is cluttered and hard to get through people often feel overwhelmed. Taking the time to clean your space can restore a sense of balance, and allows for a more productive member of society. Amidst the challenges of navigating cluttered spaces, fostering your mental well-being can also involve dedicating moments to introspection, examining both your past journey and future direction.

Reflecting: Another way to help your mental health is to allow yourself a period of reflection, during that time you should be looking at where you’ve been and where you're headed. That may include a period of planning where you're thinking about goals and coming up with objectives to meet those goals. Being still and sitting with how you feel can give a greater understanding of how those feelings are affecting you and those around you. And as we’ve learned, our mental health impacts our physical health. That means how we feel can negatively  or positively impact our actions and reactions, when dealing with someone else or even ourselves.

Structure/ Create a Plan: Another common way to take care of your mental health is to create some type of routine. Whether it’s a night time skin care routine or a daily 10 minute stretch every morning before breakfast, allowing a certain amount of structure into your life can be stabilizing and calming. It’s really important to find what works for you! Some of my favorite go to routines include healthy morning breakfasts, daily night time facial moisturizers, weekly journaling, and weekly organizing and cleaning. There are many other routines I utilize, but haven’t quite mastered consistency. Again, the importance is being able to do what works for you, and working to improve your mental health outcomes daily. So practice, practice, practice. Get in the habit of taking care of YOU!
